Situated on the East Coast of Lefkas (Levkas, Lefkada), Nidri is also sometimes spelt Nydri and is the Islands' main tourist resort. Halfway between Lefkada Town (17km north) where the island is connected by road bridge to the mainland, and Vassiliki (21km south) with it's ferry connection to Keffalonia, Nidri has it's own small ferry port with ferries to Keffalonia, Ithaka and Meganissi. Nidri has quite a good local bus service.
Geography
The immediate area is fairly flat and is good for gentle cycle rides and walks through the olive groves to the Nydri Waterfalls (approx. 4km), and around Vlicho Bay to the church of Agia Kiriaki on the headland of Geni (Yeni) opposite Nidri (approx. 8km). For those with more energy there are walks into the surrounding hills, and in spring the flowers and blossoms with beautiful views to sea are unforgettable.
Yachting
Along with Lefkada Town, Nidri is one of the main yachting destinations in the Ionian Sea. It's location on the East Coast of Levkas means that the sea is usually calm, and it is an ideal place to learn to sail. Combined with an interesting coastline full of sheltered and secluded bays, and several Islands offshore such as Skorpios (the private Onassis Island), there's plenty to see. All of this can also be enjoyed on one of the local boat trips which run throughout the summer - ideal for those that can't bring their own boat! Or rent a dinghy while you are here and explore by yourself.
Regatta
Nidri is also the assembly point for the annual Ionian Regatta - one of the biggest Yachting events in the Mediterranean. Usually held in the third week of September, it typically attracts about 190 entries and is a spectacular sight to watch. The Odysseus and other boats provide a good day out to follow the event, with a beach barbeque, but are popular and best booked in advance.
Eating and Drinking
Nidri village has a good variety of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. Restaurants vary from Chinese to Italian and International, with a good selection of traditional Greek tavernas as well. For a drink you can choose from everything from cafes to music bars, with two nightclubs open during the summer season until the early hours.
Beaches
The beaches are gently shelving, of pebble/shingle. Sand has been added to some parts of the beach. The water is generally clear, without currents, and warms up quickly during the summer. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired on the beach, watersports are available, motorboats can be rented, and there are plenty of friendly waterside bars and tavernas.
Shops and Services
There are two banks, four cash dispensing machines (ATM's), and several exchange bureaux. During the summer season, dozens of supermarkets are open all day from 9.00am until about midnight. There are three chemists, one doctor's surgery open in the evenings, and a Post Office open weekday mornings. The nearest hospital with emergency medical facilities is at Lefkada Town.
